President's Message

John Patrick Cleary M.D. President, CAN

Dear CAN Members and other members of the neonatology community who may visit this site,

Welcome to the California Association of Neonatologists website and thank you for your interest in and/or support of CAN. CAN members and the CAN board are critical to our goal of improving the outcomes of California newborns.

I would like to use this space to update you on the value and importance of CAN in a time of significant change in the healthcare landscape. I hope you will see from a description of recent activity that CAN is well worth supporting through your dues and participation.
The initial development of CAN began at a NICU medical director's meeting in the early 90's and came to fruition with the help of the AAP District IX section on Perinatal Pediatrics and generous support from Mead Johnson Nutritionals (with special thanks to my late friend Jerry Elliot). The above history is quite relevant to today as we increase our partnership with the District IX Council, are arranging another NICU medical director's meeting and we continue to partner with key sponsors to extend our academic vision. Dr. Balaji Govidaswami has created a stimulating agenda for November's directors meeting which is detailed on the website.

Through its bylaws and committee memberships CAN delivers in several key areas. These bylaws are being updated and will be presented for ratification at the annual meeting in San Diego. The CAN and AAP District IX board function in an integrated and complementary fashion and as such I recognize Andy Hopper MD and both boards for sharing leadership and the updated bylaws will reflect this fact. Our committee structure reflects the broad interests of California's neonatologists. Groups of your peers work along with the Executive Committee to plan the Annual Meeting, to advance Research and Quality Improvement, to advocate for issues affecting Standards and Practice and to encourage participation through Membership and Nominating. I encourage interested parties to consider running for a position on the CAN or AAP board as your participation will be valued and effective. One additional goal of bylaws revision is to extend affiliate member status to neonatal nurse practitioners.

Advocating for our interests and those of our patients at the state level has been quite active this year. We owe a debt of gratitude to Erin Kelly, Angela Blanchard and Tim Shannon who work to advance our goals through the legislature and who inform and advise us on threats and opportunities. There have been challenges and opportunities related to ACA implementation and changes to CCS. Steve Goldman MD deserves special recognition for working tirelessly on the details of receiving the ACA bump as promised. Steve also contributes to our cooperative relationship with the Children's Subspecialty Care Coalition who have been important allies in recent months. Another significant event was getting CAN a seat at the table where CCS Redesign is being considered. I have received quite an education on the making of sausage in the past year. Updates in these important areas will be presented at the Directors meeting and the Annual meeting.

CAN stands for Quality and CPQCC is our quality arm. Your participation in data sharing and quality improvement sets California neonatologists apart. Important research papers continue to come from this data set and our research committee hopes to stimulate more collaborative clinical research between our units. This data is also important to document our value to key partners including CCS and this data helps prove our value. The rate of serious complications in newborns has steadily fallen and this is directly related to our spirit of continuous improvement. I would also report that our relationship with key CCS leaders Bob Dimand MD and Joe Schulman MD has been of top quality and includes collaborative research and creating a shared vision for maintaining standards of care.

It is an honor to get to serve as CAN president and I look forward to seeing many of you at this year's Cool Topics in Neonatology February 27th through March 1st at the Coronado Island Marriott. Our always excellent annual meeting will feature a state of the art session on care of the ELBW and an expanded poster session. The amazing Bob Kahle MD our Secretary-Treasurer has been key to CAN's recent progress and can help you become a member, make a donation or present ideas or questions to the board.

John Patrick Cleary MD
CAN President
